The Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on prescription drugs, but its rules have been relaxed in recent years.
The agency, in its response to a recent complaint by the American Pharmacists Association, has taken action against more than 60 prescription drugs that the FDA has identified as adulterated. The agency found that more than 60 drugs, including some popular, widely used and often abused, contain the same active ingredient used in prescription medications. The drug products that are not listed as adulterated in the complaint are also listed as adulterated and may contain the same ingredients.
Drugs that are listed as adulterated can be used for medical purposes, but the agency has warned that they may be dangerous for those suffering from certain conditions. The drug products listed as adulterated include some prescription drugs such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, as well as some over-the-counter medications. These drugs are generally used to treat a wide variety of medical problems.
The FDA has also issued a warning about a class of drugs known as selective inhibitors that can be used to treat the symptoms of certain conditions.
